WHAT IS APIGENIN?

Apigenin is a bioflavonoid naturally present in chamomile tea, as well as in various plants and vegetables such as parsley, foxglove, echinacea, flax, kumquats, artichokes, passionflower, marrubus and peppermint, in varying concentrations depending on the source.

It's important to know that when apigenin is extracted from its source, it is very unstable, making it difficult for the body to absorb. This is why a natural source is preferable, such as DIX apigenin.

THE PERFECT COMBO FOR THE APIGENINE DE DIX

Our chamomile extract comes from the flower alone, so you get the benefits of chamomile, but also of Apigenin, which is naturally present in our extract. You can therefore benefit from its properties on physical and mental well-being and optimise the quality of your sleep.

Apigenine Chamomile Extract

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CONSUMING APIGENIN?

Often taken for its soothing and relaxing properties, thanks to its positive effects on GABA receptors. Apigenin therefore helps to improve sleep and the ability to fall asleep, as well as reducing the number of night-time awakenings.

Its beneficial aspects are seen more in people who are anxious and stressed by nature. In short, people who worry easily about the smallest detail.

However, apigenin has shown much more than just benefits for sleep.

Although there are still few human clinical trials investigating the effects of apigenin as a single compound, preclinical studies have suggested that apigenin may improve outcomes in relation to anxiety, brain function, oxidative stress, inflammation, and hormone regulation such as testosterone, oestrogen and cortisol.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM TAKING APIGENIN?

Daily consumption of apigenin can induce a feeling of relaxation and well-being, promoting better sleep, both in terms of quality and quantity.

A reduction in stress can also be observed. Some users report reduced anxiety, better emotional management and improved mental and physical recovery.

If taken regularly, it can have an anti-inflammatory effect, reduce mental fatigue and, in some cases, improve hormonal stability. Subtle effects on vitality and concentration can also be observed,

Results may vary according to individual factors such as age, lifestyle and general state of health.

DOES APIGENIN HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?

No toxicity has been reported following dietary consumption of apigenin. However, it is important to note that extremely high doses (30 to 100 mg/kg body weight) may cause a sedative effect as a side effect.

HOW DOES APIGENIN WORK?

Apigenin promotes the activation of GABA receptors, which play a key role in reducing neuronal excitability and preparing the central nervous system for sleep. Activation of these receptors allows chloride ions to penetrate nerve cells, reducing their excitability by hyperpolarising neurons.

Conversely, calcium has the opposite effect, increasing neuronal excitability.

By reducing this excitability, GABA also helps to curb excessive activity in the circuits involved in stress and anxiety.

Animal studies show that it may protect cells from damage caused by toxins and bacteria, thereby limiting genetic mutations. It also helps to neutralise free radicals, inhibit certain enzymes linked to tumour growth and stimulate detoxifying enzymes such as glutathione.

Its anti-inflammatory effect could also play a role in mental health, brain function and strengthening the immune system. For example, by acting on oxidative stress, it could help to improve sleep quality and stress management.

Other Preclinical studies on cells and animals show that apigenin may have beneficial effects on anxiety and brain activity. For example, a study in mice showed that a dose of 3 to 10 mg/kg body weight reduced anxiety without inducing sedation. Other research also suggests a neuroprotective effect, probably linked to an improvement in mitochondrial capacity, with concentrations ranging from 1 to 33 micromolar.

However, few clinical studies have confirmed these effects in humans. Two promising studies have investigated apigenin as a component of chamomile (Matricaria recutita) to relieve anxiety and migraine. In one study, participants suffering from both anxiety and depression took 200 to 1,000 mg of chamomile extract per day (standardised to 1.2 % apigenin) for 8 weeks, and reported an improvement in their symptoms. Another crossover study showed that a chamomile-based gel (0.233 mg apigenin per gram) applied topically reduced pain, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and noise within 30 minutes in migraine sufferers.

THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY SLEEP WITH APIGENIN

Sleep is of vital importance to our health and well-being. It plays a major role in our nervous, hormonal and physical systems. It is therefore important to optimise it. Apigenin has been scientifically proven to support healthy sleep, while chamomile relaxes and promotes physical and mental well-being.

HOW TO CHOOSE APIGENIN?

Many people are unaware of this, but when apigenin is isolated from its natural source, its bioavailability can be reduced. This means that it can be harder for the body to absorb and take full advantage of it. Studies have shown that apigenin loses stability when isolated.

Conversely, when preserved in its natural environment, it is accompanied by cofactors and bioactive compounds which act synergistically to improve its absorption by the body. In other words, chamomile extract enables apigenin to be better assimilated and more effective than an isolated (synthetic) form. This ensures not only optimal absorption, but also maximised soothing and relaxing benefits.

By choosing our apigenin extracted from chamomile, you're opting for a form of apigenin that's easy to use. natural and more bioavailable, making it a superior solution.

APIGENIN AND ITS HORMONAL ACTION?

Apigenin may help to reduce the stress hormone cortisol. An in vitro study on human adrenal cells showed that a mixture of flavonoids containing apigenin, at concentrations ranging from 12.5 to 100 micromolar, reduced cortisol production by up to 47.3 % compared with control cells.

In mice, apigenin extracted from Cephalotaxus sinensis (a plant in the plum yew family) improved the physiological response to insulin. However, these results have not been reproduced in humans. In a study in which participants consumed a black pepper drink containing apigenin, followed by a meal based on wheat bread, no significant difference in blood sugar and insulin levels was observed compared with the control group.

Apigenin may also influence reproductive hormones such as testosterone and oestrogen. Preclinical studies suggest that it modifies the activity of certain enzymes involved in testosterone regulation, even at low concentrations (5 to 10 micromolar).

Its effect on cancer cells has also been studied. When exposed to 20 micromolar apigenin for 72 hours, breast cancer cells showed inhibition of their proliferation via control of oestrogen receptors. Similarly, ovarian cells treated with apigenin showed inhibition of aromatase activity, a mechanism that could play a role in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. However, it remains unclear how these effects could be translated into an effective oral dose in humans.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHAMOMILE?

Thanks to its high terpene and flavonoid content, chamomile is used to soothe anxiety, relieve digestive problems, reduce inflammation and promote sleep.

CHAMOMILE AND ITS BENEFITS FOR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS.

This meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials suggests that consumption of chamomile may improve certain markers of glycaemic control in people with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

The researchers analysed the effect of chamomile tea supplementation on two key indicators of blood sugar regulation:

  • Fasting glycaemia (blood sugar level after several hours' fasting).
  • HbA1c (a long-term indicator of blood sugar levels).

The analysis involved 191 men and women aged between 33 and 55 with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

Study methodology

The researchers examined four randomised controlled trials, all conducted in Iran. Participants consumed brewed chamomile tea, with daily doses ranging from 4.5 to 40 grams.

Each study compared chamomile tea with another control group:

  • Chamomile tea + exercise vs. exercise alone.
  • Chamomile tea + standard diabetes treatment vs. standard treatment alone.
  • Chamomile tea vs. black tea.
  • Chamomile tea vs. water.

The duration of the interventions varied from 4 to 12 weeks.

Observed results

  • Drinking chamomile tea reduced fasting blood sugar levels in three studies (moderate effect).
  • A decrease in HbA1c was observed in two studies (marked effect).

However, three of the four studies had a high risk of bias, which limits the reliability of the results.

CHAMOMILE: A NATURAL SOLUTION TO ANXIETY?

Another study in April 2024 showed that chamomile consistently improved anxiety symptoms.

The researchers analysed the effect of chamomile taken orally on anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety was assessed using self-administered questionnaires such as the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale.

The analysis included 844 adults aged between 19 and 69.

  • Around half the participants suffered from generalised anxiety disorder.
  • The other participants had insomnia or cancer.

This systematic review examined 7 randomised controlled trials and 3 non-randomised trials.

  • 5 studies were carried out in the United States, 4 in Iran and 1 in Indonesia.
  • Most trials used chamomile extracts, in doses of between 0.25 and 2 grams a day.
  • Other trials used chamomile tea, consumed at a rate of 1 to 2 cups a day.
  • The duration of the interventions varied from 2 to 26 weeks.

Observed results

  • In 8 out of 10 studies, chamomile reduced anxiety symptoms.
  • No adverse effects have been reported.
  • However, the authors recommended caution in pregnant women and highlighted the potential risk of drug interactions with certain treatments.

APIGENIN AND LONGEVITY

In addition to its benefits for sleep, apigenin has properties for longevity

Like collagen, NAD+ is a molecule that gradually diminishes with age.

NAD+ is essential for energy production in the body.

Apigenin contributes to the reduction of CD38. This enzyme consumes NAD+, so reducing it slows down the degradation of NAD+.

High levels of NAD+ could improve daily energy, memory and sleep, yet another reason why apigenin is beneficial for sleep.

However, apigenin does not degrade more NAD+ but does not increase the level of NAD+.

Certain ingredients are more effective at increasing your NAD+, such as our formula, which optimises NAD+.
