What are Ecdysteroides?
Ecdysteroids are a class of compounds, polyhydroxylated ketosteroids with various tails, sharing a structure similar to androgens.
Initially studied as growth factors in plants and insects, their name (ecdy-) comes from the moulting process in insects, known as ecdysis.
Popular ecdysteroids include ecdysone, ecdysterone, turkesterone and 20-hydroxyecdysone. Although these four are the most frequently studied, each ecdysteroid shares common general properties, while exhibiting variations in potency and effects.
Turkesterone and ecdysterone are two beta-estradiol receptor agonists.
They then activate the beta-estradiol receptor. This naturally promotes a better balance between levels of oestrogen and androgens such as testosterone.
When ingested orally, ecdysteroids exhibit certain biological effects in mammals, described by some researchers as "behaviour similar to anabolic steroids, potentially without the side effects of anabolic steroids". This characteristic, combined with their lack of androgenicity, gives these compounds safety profiles that are far superior to those of androgenic anabolic steroids.
In addition, ecdysteroids appear to have a variety of side effects that are considered beneficial. They are associated with lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, are thought to benefit the liver and intestines by increasing protein synthesis rates, and may also have protective effects on neural tissue.
What are the benefits?
Ecdysteroids are mainly known for their potential to improve athletic performance and promote muscle growth. Although evidence is still limited and studies on humans are rare, one study involving 46 young men showed certain benefits in terms of bench press strength and muscle mass over a 10-week period compared with a placebo group. Animal studies, particularly on rats, have shown promising results, including improved muscle recovery, increased grip strength and increased endurance, as demonstrated by swimming tests. Although further research on humans is required, existing studies suggest that ecdysteroids may be effective in improving physical performance and muscle development.
In addition, research on rodents has indicated that ecdysteroids may have an anti-obesity effect. In studies in which rats and gerbils were fed a high-calorie diet, those given 20-hydroxyecdysterone (20HE) gained less weight than the control groups. In addition, 20HE was found to reduce glucose production in the rats and lower blood glucose levels in a similar way to some common anti-diabetic drugs, such as metformin. This suggests a potential benefit for people with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, although further research is needed to confirm these effects in humans.
