The importance of hydration for athletes

Hydration is essential for athletes and has an impact on virtually every aspect of sports performance.

The benefits?

What are the benefits of staying well hydrated?

Staying hydrated increases energy, improves movement, recovery and agility, thermoregulation and helps with clarity, which can improve physical and mental performance, and also reduce the risk of injury.

More than that, good hydration helps to regulate body temperature and lubricate joints. It helps to transport nutrients throughout the body and to better utilise cellular energy.

Did you know that?

When dehydration reaches 2 % to 5 %, it results in a decrease of more than 40 % in physical performance.

Athletes who become dehydrated during competition or training are at risk of cramps, dizziness, fatigue, exhaustion and reduced performance.

How to stay well hydrated?

Drinking water is good, but it's not everything!

This starts in the morning, with a large glass of water when you get up.

Then, on average, consume 240 ml of water every hour.
During sports activity, consume an average of 2 ml of water per kilogram of body weight every 15 to 20 minutes.
These figures are an average.

If you want to go further and optimise your hydration to your maximum then electrolyte and glycerol enriched drinks can be very useful. The glycerol, salt, potassium and other nutrients contained in these drinks will optimise muscle hydration and can have real positive impacts on your physical performance.
