What are Ecdysteroids?
Ecdysteroids are a class of compounds – polyhydroxylated ketosteroids with various side chains – sharing a structure similar to androgens.
Initially studied as growth factors in plants and insects, their name (ecdy‑) comes from the moulting process in insects, called ecdysis.
Among the popular ecdysteroids are ecdysone, ecdysterone, turkesterone, and 20‑hydroxyecdysone. Although these four are the most studied, each ecdysteroid shares general properties while showing differences in potency and effects.
How does it work?
Turkesterone and ecdysterone are both agonists of beta-estradiol receptors.
They activate the beta-estradiol receptor, which naturally promotes a better balance between estrogen and androgen levels, such as testosterone.
When taken orally, ecdysteroids exhibit certain biological effects in mammals, described by some researchers as having “anabolic steroid-like behavior, potentially without the side effects of anabolic steroids.” This feature, combined with their lack of androgenicity, gives these compounds a safety profile far superior to androgenic anabolic steroids.
Additionally, ecdysteroids appear to exhibit a range of side effects considered beneficial. They are associated with lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, considered beneficial for the liver and intestines by increasing protein synthesis rates, and may also exert protective effects on neural tissue.
What are the benefits?
Ecdysteroids are mainly known for their potential to enhance athletic performance and promote muscle growth. Although evidence is still limited and human studies are rare, a study involving 46 young men showed some benefits in bench press strength and muscle mass over 10 weeks compared to a placebo group. Animal studies, particularly on rats, have shown promising results, including better muscle recovery, increased grip strength, and improved endurance as demonstrated in swimming tests. While further research in humans is needed, existing studies suggest that ecdysteroids may be effective in improving physical performance and muscle development.
An anti-obesity effect?
Research on rodents suggests that ecdysteroids may have promising anti-obesity properties. In experiments where rats and gerbils were fed a high-calorie diet, those supplemented with 20-hydroxyecdysterone (20HE) gained significantly less weight than control groups. Additionally, 20HE appeared to reduce glucose production in the liver and lowered blood sugar levels, showing effects similar to common antidiabetic drugs like metformin. These findings point to a potential benefit for individuals with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, although further human studies are needed for confirmation.
Ginger also plays a key role in regulating satiety hormones such as leptin. Regular consumption has been shown to stimulate this hormone, helping reduce cravings — a common factor in unwanted weight gain.
