Ecdysteroids are primarily recognized for their potential to enhance athletic performance and promote muscle growth. Although evidence is still limited and human studies are scarce, a study involving 46 young men showed some benefits in terms of bench press strength and muscle mass over a 10-week period compared to a placebo group. Animal studies, particularly on rats, have shown promising results, including better muscle recovery, increased grip strength, and enhanced endurance, as demonstrated by swimming tests. While further research on humans is necessary, existing studies suggest that ecdysteroids could be effective in improving physical performance and muscle development.
An anti-obesity effect?
Furthermore, research on rodents has indicated that ecdysteroids might have an anti-obesity effect. In studies where rats and gerbils were fed a high-calorie diet, those receiving 20-hydroxyecdysone (20HE) gained less weight than control groups. Additionally, 20HE was found to reduce glucose production in rats and lower blood glucose levels similarly to some common antidiabetic drugs, such as metformin. This suggests a potential benefit for individuals with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, although further research is needed to confirm these effects in humans.
